I have decided to start 2026 by reviewing all the books I read in 2025. My reviews are not long and are not certainly meant to be taken with anymore seriousness than if a stranger in your second-hand bookstore where to tell you the same thing.
I’m going to be rather up front and succinct; I highly recommend The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. I would go so far as to say that it is my favourite piece of fiction that I have ever read.
The plot involves a senior demon, Screwtape, who is writing a series of letters to his nephew, a young and naïve demon by the name of Wormwood, about a patient that Wormwood has been assigned. Though we never see the letters Wormwood has for his uncle, it is written in such a way that we are never left confused as to what happened since the last letter.
This witty, satirical analysis on life explores biblical truths in a way that made me not want to put the book down. I found myself enjoying but also learning. It truly is a masterpiece of fiction and a must-read. C.S. Lewis wrote that this book was both the easiest and most depressing book he had ever written, such is the nature of the universal truths that he reveals.
